Broad-scale spatial distribution patterns of soft-sediment macrobenthic communities in the Red Sea

چکیده
In sub-tropical and tropical regions, the diversity patterns of soft-sediment macrobenthic communities are still poorly understood, particularly when compared to temperate shelf environments. The present study investigates spatial variability in distribution along eastern Red Sea margin, role sediment composition other explanatory variables determining such patterns. This has two main objectives: (i) produce a baseline characterization Saudi Arabian infauna, central southern (ii) assess relative contribution major processes driving (i.e., dispersal-based environmental filtering), based on changes beta-diversity components (turnover nestedness) across multiple scales (up ~600km), using relevant modeling methodologies. Shallow showed extremely high small-scale variability, highlighted by percentage rare species (44% at single sample) dominance turnover (species replacement) over nestedness. Our results also suggest strong influence broad- fine-scale variation composition. However, sedimentary characteristics, grain-size, played critical governing Sea. findings highlight importance regional factors shaping macrofaunal community whilst highlighting local scales. current need for conservation measures from levels (to maintain genetic diversity) preserve occurrence species). To our knowledge, no investigated marine large combining methods partitioning beta-diversity. approach applied macroinvertebrates can be extended since strategies more effective mechanisms considered.

Diversity and spatial distribution patterns of the benthic macrofauna communities in the southeast of the Caspian Sea (Golestan Province– Iran) in relation to environmental conditions
Biodiversity and structure of the benthic macrofauna communities were studied in the southeast the Caspian Sea (Golestan Province – Iran) during one year from October 2014 to September 2015. Seasonal samplings were done at 6 stations in 3 transects. Depth, temperature, salinity, pH, E.C., total organic matter and grain size were measured. More than 4,037 individuals belonging to five orders, Po...

the changes in density and biomass of macrobenthos were seasonally investigated from winter 2005 till fall 2006 in southern caspian sea. samples were taken with a 225cm2 van veen grab from depths of 7 and 20 meters along two transects: line 8 area (western part) and radio darya area (eastern part). totally, 5 classes of macrobenthos were identified of which the most abundant populations were po...
متن کاملBroad-scale Patterns of the Distribution of Body Sizes of Individuals in Ecological Communities
INTRODUCTION Body size is one of the most fundamental properties of an organism, affecting metabolic rate, lifespan, home range size, reproductive rate, and many other ecological attributes (e.g., Peters 1983, Calder 1984, Schmidt-Nielsen 1984). Ecologists have long been interested in using these regular patterns to gain insight into ecological systems (Peters 1983), and it is increasingly reco...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal distribution of larvae of coral reef fishes in northern Red Sea, Egypt
The larval community of coral reef fishes in the Red Sea was studied in coastal and offshore sites to determine the effects of the exposure to waves and currents and the distance from the shore in structuring the larval fish community. Plankton sampling from inshore and offshore sites and the exposed and sheltered sides of the reefs resulted in the collection of 2048 larvae representing 49 diff...
متن کاملSoft-Sediment Communities
arine sediments constitute one of the largest habitat types on Earth, covering roughly 80% of the ocean bottom (Lenihan and Micheli 2001; Nybakken and Bertness 2005). As a result, to truly understand the processes that shape communities on our planet, it is critical to understand the underpinnings of this habitat. In fact, much effort has been focused on studying this habitat (especially in nea...
